[греч. hormao — привожу в движение, побуждаю]гормоны (см. гормон) в основном стероидной природы, производимые половыми железами и определяющие у человека и животных половую дифференцировку в эмбриональном периоде, характер вторичных половых признаков, функциональную активность репродуктивной системы и формирование специфических поведенческих реакций. П.г. синтезируются гл. обр. в половых железах женщин (яичники) и мужчин (семенники); некоторое количество гормонов образуется, кроме того, в плаценте и корковом веществе надпочечников. В мужских половых железах образуется небольшое количество женских гормонов, и наоборот. П.г. влияют на многие процессы промежуточного обмена, водно-солевой обмен, а также на состояние адаптационных систем организма. Различают мужские и женские П.г. К мужским П.г. (андрогенам) относятся тестостерон и дигидротестостерон, биосинтез которых представляет собой ряд последовательных ферментативных превращений холестерина (см. холестерин), а основным физиологическим регулятором их секреции служит лютеинизирующий гормон. К женским П.г. (эстрогенам) относятся эстрол, эстрон, эстрадиол, биосинтез которых представляет собой ароматизацию С19-стероидов, катализируемую комплексом ферментов, локализованных в микросомах. Основное биологическое действие эстрогенов заключается в их влиянии на формирование и функционирование женских половых органов. Желтым телом яичника, корой надпочечников, яичками и плацентой синтезируется также стероидный гормон прогестерон, который относится к С21-стероидам. Различные препараты П.г. и их аналогов используются в медицине в качестве лекарственных средств; напр., мужской П.г. тестостерон применяется при раке молочной железы у женщин, женский П.г. (синэстрол и стильбестрол) — при гипертрофии и раке предстательной железы у мужчин и др. Эстрогены (эстрон) обнаружены в 1927 г. А. Бутенандтом, им же впервые в 1931 г. выделен из мочи мужчин андростерон (тестостерон), химическая структура которого была установлена в 1934 г. одновременно А. Бутенандтом и Л.
